Creating a Relaxing Evening Routine Before Fall Arrives

As summer begins to fade and the first hints of fall whisper through the air, our bodies naturally crave a slower rhythm. Evenings become the perfect time to pause, breathe, and create small habits that help us release the day and prepare for deeper rest.

For women navigating busy lives, caregiving, work, or simply the transitions that come with this season of life, a calming evening routine can feel like a soft exhale — a gentle reminder that you deserve to wind down in a way that feels nourishing and truly your own.

Here are a few simple ways to create a relaxing evening routine before fall arrives.

1. Set the Tone with Lighting

As the sun sets earlier, invite coziness indoors with soft, warm lighting. A few candles, a salt lamp, or even dimming overhead lights can signal to your body that it’s time to unwind. This simple shift helps your nervous system prepare for rest and sets the mood for calm.

2. Sip Something Soothing

A warm cup of herbal tea can be the anchor of your evening wind-down. Chamomile, lemon balm, or rooibos are wonderful calming options.

If it’s still too warm for hot tea, a refreshing mocktail is a lovely option. My Summer Sips Collection is full of alcohol-free recipes that hydrate, cool, and help you feel restored without weighing you down.

3. Disconnect to Reconnect

Give yourself the gift of turning off screens an hour before bed. Instead, slip into a book, play calming music, or jot down thoughts in a journal. These simple choices help clear mental clutter and create a sense of spaciousness before sleep.

4. Gentle Movement or Stretching

A few minutes of stretching, restorative yoga, or simply lying on the floor with your legs up the wall can release tension held in your body. Think of it as a reset for tired muscles and an invitation to let go of the day.

5. A Skincare Routine as Self-Care

One of my favorite ways to signal that it’s time to rest is a nightly skincare routine. Cleansing away the day, applying nourishing creams or oils, and moving slowly through those steps not only supports your skin but also gives your mind a sense of closure and calm.

6. Empty a Busy Mind

If your thoughts feel too loud to fall asleep, try a quick “brain dump.” Write down everything swirling in your head, from to-dos to worries or ideas, and then set the paper aside. This simple act tells your brain it doesn’t need to hold onto everything while you rest.

7. Prepare Your Space for Morning

One of the most calming gifts you can give yourself is waking up to a tidy, welcoming space. Lightly clear surfaces, set out your morning supplies, or lay out tomorrow’s clothes. Small touches create a sense of ease that carries into the next day.

A Gentle Reminder

Your evening routine doesn’t need to be elaborate, just intentional. Choose one or two habits that feel calming and repeat them consistently. Over time, they’ll become a natural signal to your body that it’s safe to rest and recharge.

Because true wellness isn’t about doing more, it’s about finding simple habits that help you rest, restore, and feel like you again.
